How to choose a padel racket in 6 steps

The finder above does all this work for you, but if you want to understand why it suggests some rackets and not others, these are the factors it takes into account. To go deeper, read our complete guide to choosing a padel racket.

1. Your playing level

This is the most important factor. If you are just starting out, look for a beginner racket: round, with a soft core and low balance, forgiving on off-centre shots. As you improve, you can move on to intermediate-level rackets, with more power and precision, and later to advanced rackets, which demand more technique. If you are not sure where you stand, check the padel levels from 1 to 7.

2. Shape: round, teardrop or diamond

Round rackets have the sweet spot in the centre and give more control. Teardrop rackets balance control and power, and are the most versatile. Diamond rackets concentrate the weight at the top to smash harder, but are less manoeuvrable.

3. Balance and weight

A high balance adds power but tires the arm more; a low or medium one gives manoeuvrability and control. In weight, most men’s rackets are between 360 and 375 g, and women's rackets are usually around 345-365 g. Here we explain how to choose the weight of your racket.

4. Materials and feel

The face material (fibreglass or carbon) changes the feel a lot: fibreglass is more flexible and comfortable, and carbon stiffer, more precise and more durable. In the core, soft EVA rubber gives ball output and hard rubber gives control and power on strong shots. More details in foam or EVA rubber.

5. Injuries and discomfort

If you have elbow, wrist or shoulder discomfort, avoid heavy rackets with a high balance and hard cores. A light round or teardrop racket with a soft core absorbs vibrations better.

6. Your budget

You do not need the most expensive racket to enjoy the game. There are excellent models at every price point, and in rackets on sale you will find models from previous seasons with big discounts.

FAQs

How does the racket finder work?
You answer 8 questions about your level, your game, your build and your budget. We then score every racket in our catalogue from 0 to 100 according to its shape, balance, weight, materials, power and control, and show you the ones that suit you best, explaining why.
Which padel racket should I choose as a beginner?
A round racket with a low or medium balance, a soft core and a moderate weight. It is easier to control and forgives shots that do not hit the centre.
Which racket is best for tennis elbow?
A light racket with a low or medium balance and a soft core that absorbs vibrations. Avoid diamond rackets with a high balance and hard cores.
Is a control or power racket better?
It depends on your game. If you build the point from the back or play on the forehand side, a control racket will give you more precision. If you smash a lot or play on the backhand side, a power racket will help you close out points.
Can I compare several rackets?
Yes. Tick “Compare” on up to three rackets and you will see their features side by side: price, shape, balance, weight, materials, power and control.
