When to change your padel racket? 7 signs you shouldn't ignore

How to choose a racket

Loss of ball output, cracks, vibrations or a change in level: the signs that you need a new racket.

    In short

    • A racket loses performance with use: the core softens and the faces fatigue.
    • If you play 2–3 times a week, check your racket every 12–18 months.
    • Cracks in the frame, bubbles or a hollow sound are clear signs it's time to change.
    • Moving up a level is also a good reason to change racket.

Padel rackets don't last forever. With every shot, the rubber core compresses and the layers of the faces suffer small deformations. At first you don't notice it, but over the months the racket loses stiffness, ball output and control. These are the signs that the time has come.

The 7 signs you need a new racket

    1. The ball doesn't come off the same. You have to hit harder to get the same depth.
    2. You feel more vibration. The core absorbs impact less well and more reaches your arm.
    3. It sounds different. A hollow or «tinny» sound indicates that the core has degraded.
    4. Cracks in the frame or faces. They affect the structure and can get worse.
    5. Bubbles or sunken areas on the face. A sign that the layers are separating.
    6. You have moved up a level. Your game calls for a different racket, even if yours is perfect.
    7. New pain in your arm. A worn racket transmits more vibration to the elbow.

How long does a padel racket last?

    Playing frequency Approximate lifespan
Once a week 2 years or more
    2–3 times a week 12–18 months
4 or more times / competition 6–12 months

Rackets with carbon faces usually last longer than fibreglass ones, and hard EVA cores longer than foam ones.

How to extend the life of your racket

    • Use a frame protector to avoid knocks against the floor and walls.
    • Don't leave it in the car: extreme heat damages the core.
    • Keep it in its cover or in a thermal racket bag .
    • Avoid hitting the court or the wall with the racket.

    FAQs

How often should you change your padel racket?
It depends on how often you play: with 2–3 matches a week, every 12–18 months. Professionals change it every few weeks.
Can a broken racket be repaired?
Small cracks in the frame can be sealed, but the racket won't perform the same. If the crack affects the face or the throat, it's best to replace it.
What should I do with my old racket?
Keep it as a spare racket for training or for guests, or donate it to a padel club or school.
